Berlin Irish win the Finnegan’s Derby by 26–12

Two years after their last duel, Irish took on local rivals Siemensstadt (plus BRC III) in the battle of Jungfernheide.

The early exchanges were tight, with neither team giving much territory away for the first 20 minutes of the match. The Irish found themselves with great field position a few times but couldn’t capitalize.

At the 26th minute mark, fly half Daubney successfully slotted a penalty over for the Irish. In the 31st minute, Irish capped off a great set move with a quick ball with the number 10 going over in the corner for a short range finish. Throughout the first half, the Irish pack dominated Siemensstadt with crucial turnover overs and scorching runs.

After half-time the battle resumed and the Irish forward pack started to assert their dominance at set piece in the scrum, line out and rolling maul which put the Irish backs on the front foot.

Siemenstadt did come back in the middle minutes of the second half, having a well-worked try in the corner and a penalty try for the Irish not rolling away. In that period 2 yellow were awarded to the Irish, but the rest of the boys stood up well and defended as a unit.

Toward the back of the second half, the Irish landed the knockout blows.

Through one of their 3 debutants who came on and score two well-worked tries by the and push the final score to 26–12.

The gents take on BSC this weekend at the Forke, in what promises to be a cracking game. Kickoff at 12:00.
